And the hits just keep on coming...

Top sprinter Indyanne, who fractured a sesamoid in her left front ankle during the GI La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita on December 27th, has been euthanized.

Owner John Sikura of Hill n' Dale Farms was quoted: "We did everything we could. It was unfair to continue treatment in a manner that would have been inhumane to this courageous mare. Her condition deteriorated to the point that she could not enjoy a pain free life. A lack of blood supply to the area of the injured limb caused a large wound that did not respond to treatment. Dr. [Larry] Bramlage could not do surgery to stabilize the joint under these circumstances. We did all we could and feel awful about the result."

A 4yo daughter of Indian Charlie, she was first purchased for $375,000 at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Florida March sale of 2-year-olds in training. A multiple Graded Stakes winner, she captured her first four starts -- which included a 9 1/2 length score in the GIII Azalea Stakes at Calder -- by a combined 32 1/2 lengths. She was bought by Sikura after winning the GIII Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes last fall at Keeneland.

Her death brings the total of fatal injuries sustained at Santa Anita since the start of the winter/spring meet on December 26th to 4, with numerous non-fatal injuries being reported as track conditions continue to shift with the weather. Measures are currently underway to correct the problem. For more on this, including trainer opinions and notes from the ProRide expert, click here.
