Retired Hall of Famers to ride at Oak Tree

Eight Hall of Fame jockeys -- with combined earnings of more than $1.5 billion from 49,163 victories -- will compete in a pari-mutuel wagering event, The Living Legends Race, on October 18 during the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meet as a prelude to the following weekend's Breeders' Cup.

Held in conjunction with racing's new Legends on Tour as well as the Breeders' Cup, Hall of Fame jockeys set to compete in Santa Anita's unprecedented race are, in descending order of age: Angel Cordero Jr., 65; Jacinto Vasquez, 64; Sandy Hawley, 59; Pat Day, 55; Chris McCarron, 53; Jerry Bailey, 51; Gary Stevens, 45, and Julie Krone, 45. Their average age is 55. [BRISnet]
The race (carded as the 4th) is an allowance sprint for Cal-breds at 126lbs, with mounts to be drawn at random by the riders. It will be preceded by a Living Legends Salute in the winners' circle: Laffit Pincay Jr., Eddie Delahoussaye, and Jorge Velasquez are scheduled to appear as Living Legends Ambassadors.

No word yet if this event will be televised anywhere other than possibly TVG/HRTV. Nevertheless I'm going to make red Cool-Aid, pour myself a big bowl of Cap'n Crunch, and revert to a twelve-year-old girl in front of my computer. Hand to God. ^-^

Not to be a downer but doesn't anybody think this race could be a bit "dangerous"? Angel is the only one who rides regularly!

A fair point, although I'm pretty sure Chris spends a bit of time in the saddle still; and it's not like Jerry retired all that long ago. Besides, I doubt any of these riders would do this on a lark. I'm sure they've thought about the risks, and they're not after a GI purse.
